Thirty young Beninese activists and journalists gathered in January 2026 at the Hôtel Le Doppel in Bohicon for the Benin Youth Climate Reporting Academy project. This initiative by the Save Our Planet NGO aimed to strengthen the capacities of these young people from Bassila, Parakou, Abomey, Calavi, Ketou, Porto-Novo, Savalou, Zogbodomey, and Bohicon. For trainer William Tchoki, this approach is essential : « The more of us there are talking about the environment, the more we can impact the population on environmental issues. »

During the training workshop, participants learned about the challenges of climate change, climate justice, and storytelling and media production technique. Anna Tchagnonsi, a student and activist, recalls a key definition: « This day taught me a lot… I was able to note… that when we talk about climate change, we must note that it is an increase in the earth’s average temperature and it is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases. »
The training was delivered by a quartet of experts: Megan Valère Sossou, environmentalist; Rachida Yenoukounme Houssou, journalism consultant; Dr. William Tchoki, environmental journalist; and Modeste Glin, radio journalist. Trainer Rachida Yenoukounme Houssou emphasized suitable formats : « The news report : more concrete, you see certain realities firsthand… Interviews : short video or audio… An image that conveys a lot. »

The academy combined theory and practice with a field visit to a rainwater harvesting site under the Program for Urban Adaptation to Climate Change (PAVICC) in Bohicon. For Sylvain Ecatcho from Bassila, this training is crucial : « I believe this training comes at just the right time to address some problems that my community… faces due to climate change. It will lead me to produce journalism that will… lead the population to change its behavior. »
Following this immersion, each participant received individual coaching. Daré-Montan Dossoumon, a journalist participant, now feels equipped: « Today I am able to identify a problem in my society and solve it through journalistic production that addresses an aspect of climate. »

The workshop culminated in the official creation of a Beninese Network of Young Climate Reporters, led by a coordination team of three elected members and three regional representatives, including Anna Tchagnonsi for the North. For her, the mission is clear: « To better reach our audience, we must provide solutions after identifying the problems. »
Supported by the Earth Rising Foundation and the Arete Arts Foundation, the project plans to award prizes for the best productions with work equipment.

William Tchoki praised this initiative : « It is a major step that Save Our Planet has taken by providing the basics of understanding to our young colleagues. » He insists on specialization: « I insisted on this question of specialization… the environment is an issue that touches every aspect of human life… if more of us talk about it, we will undoubtedly impact a lot of people. »
Rachida Yenoukounmè Houssou, for her part, appreciated the diversity of profiles : « It’s a good mix… it’s time for [the activists] to learn the rules of content production. » An opinion shared by activist Aurelle Kouagou: « I especially appreciated our sessions on content production techniques in a climate context. After this workshop, I will be able to debate on subjects concerning the climate and the environment. »
